15.6 The Doppler Effect

Doppler Effect/Shock Waves
Instructions:
Click on the "Start Simulation" button to start the applet.  The speed of the wave, its wavelength, and the speed of the point source can be adjusted. Click near tip of the corresponding arrow and drag the mouse to the left or right. While the applet is running, you can suspend the simulation by clicking on the left mouse button. While the applet is suspended, you can measure the angle that a line joining the mouse position to the wave source makes with the horizontal.

Navigation: You can come back to this window by pressing the "Close Simulation" button on the bottom frame of the utility.

Explanation:
The default settings of this applet simulate the situation discussed in section 15.6 and illustrated by figure 15.12. You can obtain shock waves (section 15.7) if you set the speed of the point source greater than the speed of the wave. You can use the applet's capability of measuring angles to verify equation 15.8.
