About the Authors

Edwin R. Jones received his BS from Clemson University and his MS and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He has been on the faculty of the University of South Carolina since 1965 where he is currently Professor of Physics, Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, and Director of the IMA/MAT programs in Physics and Natural Science. His research interest have included magnetic behavior of solids and three-dimensional imaging. Dr. Jones wrote another textbook, Solid State Electronics, published in 1971, and contributed a chapter to Stereo Computer Graphics, published in 1993.

Richard L. Childers received his BS degree from Presbyterian College and his MS and Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee. In 1963, he joined the faculty of the University of South Carolina. He also achieved the Distinguished Professor of Physics Emeritus status at USC. His teaching interests were primarily in the introductory courses and laboratories and in demonstration experiments. His research interest was in high energy physics. He also served as a high school outreach coordinator. Prof. Childers hobbies included photography, reading, and travel. He and his wife Sigrid had two daughters and five grandchildren. Prof. Childers passed away in February of 2000.
