For the Instructor:

Visual Resource Library

A group of 150 four-color illustrations is provided on a CD-ROM. This CD-ROM allows you to quickly browse through the images and captions from the text, arrange images in your own custom-designed slide show, and enlarge images for greater projection. You can also print full- and half-size images and export images for use in word-processing programs. Additional features include: (1) find and sort thumbnail image records by name, type, location, and user-defined keywords; (2) search using keywords or terms; (3) view hundreds of images at the same time with the Small Gallery View; (4) flip through hundreds of images quickly using a mouse; (5) display all important file information for easy identification; (6) drag and place images into virtually any graphics, desktop publishing, presentation, or multimedia application.

On-Line Learning Center

A Contemporary College Physics, Updated 3e, OLC is available with additional information, course-presentation material, web testing, and more. Visit the McGraw-Hill Higher Education website at www.mhhe.com to learn more about the entire list of physics products published by McGraw-Hill.

CAPA Overview:

With CAPA, an instructor can create and/or assemble personalized assignments, quizzes, and examinations with a large variety of conceptual questions and quantitative problems. These can include pictures, animations, graphics, tables, links, etc.. The writing and development is facilitated by numerous templates designed to encourage students to collaborate and discuss concepts while insuring that problems differ for each student to inhibit rote copying.

Students are given instant feedback and relevant hints via the internet and may correct errors without penalty prior to an assignment's due date. The system keeps track of students' participation and performance, and records are available in real time both to the instructor and to the individual student. Statistical tools and graphical displays facilitate assessment and course administration.

The system was developed at Michigan State University and was first used in a small (92 student) physics class in the Fall of 1992. It has since been used by more than 100,000 students in astronomy, biochemistry, chemistry, mathematics, physics, botany, accelerator physics, human food and nutrition, family and child ecology, and computer science courses.

WebAssign Overview:

Grade Homework Efficiently

Welcome to WebAssign, a convenient and useful way to deliver, collect, grade and record assignments instantly and accurately!

Students using WebAssign can receive immediate feedback on their homework and use the service to master information and skills, leading to more competence and better grades.

Teachers using WebAssign can free themselves from the drudgery of grading papers and recording scores, resulting in more free time for meeting with students and preparing for class presentations.

Both students and teachers can use WebAssign from home or office-in fact, from any computer with a connection to the World Wide Web.

Using WebAssign

Current users can log onto WebAssign using any Web browser connected to the World Wide Web. Simply enter your username, your institution (in lowercase, usually an abbreviation), and password, and click the Submit button to log in.

You will be given your assignments page for that class--and from that page, you can complete all assignments. If you do not have a username or password, please contact your teacher directly.

For the student, McGraw-Hill offers the following:

On-Line Learning Center

A Contemporary College Physics, Updated 3e, OLC is available with additional information, self quizzes, on-line resources, simulations, career opportunities, and more.

Interactive CD-ROM

This is included free with each textbook. It is a powerful study tool--a browser-based CD with interactive simulations, animated sequences, quizzes, glossary, links to related web-based tutorial material, and more.

Special Text/MEPI Package

McGraw-Hill is offering a specially priced package of Jones/Childers, Contemporary College Physics Updated 3/e plus MEPI: Multimedia Enhanced Physics Instruction, a two-CD boxed set produced by Maha Ashour-Abdalla at the UCLA Space Plasma Simulation Group.

Using a hyperlink interface, MEPI gives students hands-on experience in exploring the world of physics through interactive demonstrations and experiments. Each topic in MEPI is comprised of five tutorial components:

Concepts. In-depth topical explanations

Videos. 28 short (3 - 6 minute) videos enable students to view a wide variety of actual experiments being performed

Simulations. Students change variables to set up different scenarios or experiments in simulated physical phenomena (see below for list of MEPI simulations)

Quizzes. Approximately 8 - 10 conceptual multiple-choice questions per chapter

Problems. 3 - 5 computational problems are first animated, then carefully outlined for step-by-step solving; students who enter wrong answers receive hints for guidance, and the system "keeps score." For more information about MEPI and about obtaining review copy, click here.
