9.3 Torque Beam Balance (Torque)

 

Explanation: This applet is an illustration of torque and addition of torques as discussed in Section 9.3. Equilibrium is established when the sum of all torques acting on the beam is zero (Equation 9.12). Each of the mass pieces has a weight of 1.0 N, and each of the colored rectangles is 0.10 m. "Left side torques" result in counterclockwise rotation and are positive; "right side torques" are negative.
