31.8 The pn junction

pn-Junction Simulation
Instructions:
Click on the "Start Simulation" button to open the applet window. The red rectangle represents a p-type semiconductor and the blue rectangle an n-type semiconductor. The type of semiconductor can be selected from the drop-down menu on the bottom of the applet. You can also set the concentration of acceptors Na and the concentration of donors Nd by typing the numbers in the appropriate boxes then pressing the "setNewValue" button. You form the junction either by pressing the button "FormJunction" or by dragging one of the rectangles onto the other. You can separate a junction by pressing the "Separate" button.

Navigation: You can come back to this window by pressing the "Close Simulation" button on the bottom frame of the utility.

Explanation:
The applet simulates the formation of a pn junction.  As discussed in section 31.8, electrons and holes diffuse and recombine to form a depletion region. The equilibrium band diagram shown is similar to the one shown in figure 31.24e.
