Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why was the change made to the formatting of the Online Exercises?
A: The Internet is a forum that is still developing; changes on the Web occur daily. In order to ensure that the Web site links needed to perform the exercises are kept active, all URL's have been moved to the textbook Web site address, which will remain active while the book is still in print. When a link goes dead-a Web site closes-staff editors are able to replace it without requiring any changes to the textbook.
Q: There are a lot of exercises! Any tips for negotiating the Worksheets?
A: Only through practice and application will the rules of grammar and mechanics become secondhand. Our recommended strategy for using the chapter assessment material would be: take the Checkpoint quizzes as you work your way through the chapter content. Each Checkpoint exercise focuses on a specific rule or concept. If you find the rule or concept challenging, or if you feel you need more practice before moving on, go to the correlating Student CD Checkup exercise.
The strategy for the Worksheets is similar. The Worksheet Practices are arranged in order of increasing difficulty; that is, Practices 5-8 in each chapter are more challenging than Practices 1-4. As you work your way through the first four practices, you will again find CD icons to direct you to the Student CD for more exercises, should you need more practice. Once you have completed Practices 1-4 and the CD exercises, address Practices 5-8 to further test your comprehension.
Q: Where did the Slip-ups from the previous edition go? They were an entertaining feature.
A: And they still are. In the second edition, these humorous writing outtakes appear under the margin feature heading "Edit Patrol."
Q: Is it really okay not to use a comma with a number such as 4000?
A: Yes, though all writers and all reference manuals will not agree on the point. This was a stylistic choice on the part of the authors based on the information from the Gregg Reference Manual, the primary reference text used in developing this course.
Q: Can you explain the new vocabulary feature box that appears in the text?
A: In accordance with the learning strategy devised for BEW, each chapter of the text has a theme that is described by the chapter's Workplace Applications feature. All examples, Checkpoints, practice exercises, writing and proofreading exercises, and online activities revolve around this real-world theme. The new vocabulary feature identifies terms that relate to the chapter topic as they are used in exercises and examples.
