Chapter 2: Overview of Parts of Speech

Chapter Summary
The English language is organized into patterns called the parts of speech. The eight parts of speech are the noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, conjunction, preposition, and interjection.

Nouns name people, places, and things as well as activities, ideas, or qualities. Verbs appear in all sentences. In most cases, verbs show action; however, verbs may also show a state of being or help a main verb.

Adjectives and adverbs describe other parts of speech. Adjectives describe nouns and pronouns. Adverbs modify main verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs.

Conjunctions join similar words, phrases, or sentences. Prepositions may be single words or phrases. Interjections do not often appear in sentences. When they do, they indicate a strong emotion or express enthusiasm or disapproval.
