Chapter 4: Noun Functions and Plurals
Chapter Summary
In this chapter, you learned about the many functions of the noun in sentences. Nouns name people, places, and things; they also identify activities, ideas, and qualities. Nouns may be proper nouns or common nouns. Proper nouns refer to specific persons, places, or things; they are capitalized. All other nouns are common nouns.
You also learned to recognize the difference between singular, plural, and collective nouns. You learned the basic rules for forming the plurals of regular nouns as well as the plurals of foreign and irregular nouns.
Nouns are an easily recognized part of speech in a sentence. Your knowledge of their many functions will be valuable as you continue studying the remaining parts of speech.
