Chapter 9: Verb Types and Parts

Chapter Summary
Sentences are not complete or meaningful without a verb. The three types of verbs are action, linking, and helping verbs. An action verb tells what the subject does. An action verb may be transitive (needs an object to complete a thought) or intransitive (needs no object to complete a thought). A linking verb does not indicate action. If the subject is renamed or described, the verb that is used is a linking verb. A helping verb, along with the main verb, forms a verb phrase.

Verbs are either regular or irregular and have four principal parts-the present, the past, the past participle, and the present participle. Most verbs are regular verbs. Verbs involve more form changes than any other part of speech.
