Chapter 10: Verb Tense, Voice, and MoodVerbals
Chapter Summary
The tense of a verb helps to identify the time of an action or state of being. The main tenses of a verb are called the simple tenses the present, the past, and the future. In addition to these simple tenses, there are three perfect tenses and the progressive tense to consider.
Business writers prefer to use the active voice rather than the passive voice in their written communications. Active voice means that the subject of a sentence performs the action; the passive voice means the subject receives the action.
The terms indicative, imperative, and subjunctive refer to the mood of a verb.
Chapter 10 also discusses verbals gerunds, participles, and infinitives. Verbals are words that look like verbs but function as nouns (gerunds and infinitives), adjectives (participles and infinitives), or adverbs (infinitives).
