Chapter 14: Prepositions

Chapter Summary
A preposition connects a noun or pronoun that is the object of a preposition to another part of speech in a sentence. There are numerous prepositions that act as connectors. A prepositional phrase contains a preposition, a noun or pronoun object, and any modifiers of the latter.

Prepositional phrases function as adjectives when they modify nouns or pronouns. These phrases function as adverbs when they modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. Do not confuse prepositional phrases and infinitive phrases. A prepositional phrase has no verbs; it has a noun or pronoun as an object. An infinitive phrase contains a verb preceded by the word to.

Chapter 14 also reviews prepositions used in idioms-expressions that have occurred through the years but which have no recognized rules for usage. Once you see how frequently prepositions are used, you will realize how indispensable they are in your writing.
