Student Resources Chapter 1: Introduction to Interviewing Chapter Summaries An interview is an interactive communication exchange with a specific purpose. All interviews share common elements, including an interaction, a purpose, and an exchange. Interviews are composed of three stages: introduction, body, and conclusion. The verbal or nonverbal idea, belief, or opinion that is conveyed in the interview is the message, which should correspond to the purpose of the interview. Interviews, a form of interpersonal communication, transfer messages between a sender and a receiver. The receiver's response to a sender's message, known as feedback, is an example of an interpersonal message in an interview The three types of standard interviews are selection interviews, information-gathering interviews, and persuasion interviews. The goal of a selection interview is to screen applicants for employment, awards, or membership. The intent of information-gathering interviews is to generate information from the parties involved. The purpose of persuasion interviews is to change the mind of individuals, reinforce a position, or recruit.
