| Student Resources Chapter 3: Navigating the Interview Exchange Chapter Summaries An interviewer's primary tool for conducting an interview is questioning. This communication tactic solicits, directs, and searches for responses that are needed to fulfill the interview goal. Interview questions can be placed into five assessment categories: behavior questions, attitude/opinion questions, credential questions, knowledge/experience questions, and imaginative questions. In addition to assessment questions, there are several methods for asking interview questions, including asking open/closed questions, asking primary/secondary questions, and asking neutral/leading questions. To answer interview questions more effectively, interviewees should prepare for an interview by summarizing past experiences, work history, skills, and personal interests with an interview self-assessment. Additionally, an interviewee should practice responding to common interview questions that will highlight information obtained through an interview self-assessment. While practicing common interview questions, it is important to avoid memorizing answers because "canned responses" often give the impression of being fake or that the interviewee is unable to react well in stressful situations.
