| Student Resources Chapter 5: Pre-Interview Research Chapter Summaries To prepare for a successful interview, it is important for an interviewee to do research prior to the interview. When preparing for a selection interview, background, criteria, and execution research should be conducted. Background research obtains historical information about the reasons that the award or position is available. Criteria research involves determining the qualifications or factors that will be taken into consideration for the award or position. Execution research should include gathering information that outlines the expectations of the person selected. The primary type of research conducted for persuasion interviews is stance research, which involves finding out where a person or group stands on a given issue. The goal of topic research, conducted for information-gathering interviews, is to determine what will be discussed during the interview. In addition to researching the interview's purpose, it is advantageous to conduct organizational research. Information on a given organization can be obtained through annual reports, organization Web sites, the local chamber of commerce, marketing/public relations departments, job fairs, company employees, and college and vocational school campus career centers.
