| Student Resources Chapter 6: Preparing for the Interview Chapter Summaries An interviewee's interview attitude, the way he or she perceives the interview situation, can affect the success of an interview. Although many people enter an interview situation with feelings of fear and anxiety, there are several steps that can be taken to develop a positive attitude during the interview process. These steps include conducting organizational research, listing strengths, reviewing past accomplishments, and using an attitude implement. There are established guidelines for dressing appropriately for an interview. This serves the interviewee by helping create a positive first impression as well as creating uniformity among all interview applicants. Men and women have different set standards for interview attire, but these standards are similar in that outfits should be neutral, conservative, and professional. To ensure a successful interview, it is beneficial for an interviewee to conduct a mock interview. Practicing the interview process with another person allows the interviewee to receive feedback and provides an opportunity to critique the quality and length of the answers given, the level of comfort experienced, the delivery of the introduction and conclusion, and the effectiveness of the communication style used.
