Chapter 7: Participating in the Interview Exchange

Chapter Summaries

There are five pre-interview steps that can contribute to the success of an interview: follow your normal daily routine prior to the interview, prepare all interview material ahead of time, determine how much time is need to arrive at the interview on time, pick out your interview clothes the night before, and take time to make any final mental preparations.

The way people interact in an organization is the organizational culture of that organization. It is important for the interviewee to be aware of the existing organizational culture and to display an ability to work well in it. In addition to an interviewee's ability to work well in a company's organizational culture, interviewers are also concerned about the interviewee's personal information. This information should be provided in a brief personal mission statement that describes future goals, attitude about work, past accomplishments, and information about interviewee.

During the various stages of an interview, there are certain behaviors that should be exhibited. During the introduction stage of an interview it is important to greet the interviewer with a smile and a handshake. It is important to use correct grammar, show enthusiasm, avoid nervous and negative body language, be aware of time, listen to the questions, and use positive body language during the body stage of the interview. As in the introduction stage, it is important to shake the interviewer's hand in the closing stage of the interview. It is also useful to ask when to expect to hear from the interviewer about the position.
