Chapter 8: Conducting an Interview

Chapter Summaries

During an interview, an interviewer should promote a continual shift in the control of power by encouraging the interviewee to ask questions and engage in open dialogue. This can be achieved by giving the interviewee positive feedback as well as maintaining appropriate behavior and nonverbal communication signals throughout the interview. Interviewers often find an interview schedule helpful, as it provides of a list of questions that are geared to the interview purpose. In addition to using questions on an interview schedule, interviewers should use secondary questions, or probes, to expand on a response given by the interviewee or to redirect questions back to the interview purpose. There are several different types of probes used in an interview: nudging probes, silent probes, information probes, overview probes, and repeat probes.

When listening to information presented during interview, the interviewer will make a perceptive inference, which involves analyzing the message meaning, determining what context the message was given in, and then forming an opinion about the merit of the statement. Listening skills are enhanced with practice. An interviewer should eliminate distractions during the interview, make eye contact with the interviewee, ask follow-up questions, take notes, and pay attention to the interviewee's body language in order to better listen to the interviewee.
