Student Resources Chapter 10: After the Interview Chapter Summaries Once an interview has been concluded, there are several steps an interviewee should take the ensure that the interviewer will remember him or her as a professional and competent applicant. Most important, a thank-you letter should be sent to the interviewer. The interviewee may initiate verbal contact with the interviewer only after the time designated by the interviewer has passed. Visiting the organization after an interview should be avoided. Often an additional interview, a follow-up interview, is needed. Follow-up interviews provide an opportunity to discuss matters that may not be appropriate to discuss in an initial interview, such as salary, benefits, and organizational policies. Follow-up interviews also give the interviewer an opportunity to ask more in-depth and complex questions as well as highly technical and specialized questions. An applicant's technical abilities might also be tested at this time. Organizations are able to test an applicant in a safe forum that is free from potential organizational loss. Interviews, which were originally very rigid and formal, are now adjusting to fit the needs of specific organizations.
