Student Resources Chapter 7: Library Research
Chapter Summary Libraries are great tools for conducting research. There are several types of libraries, including public libraries, college libraries, law libraries, medical libraries, and libraries for the blind; each offers individuals a vast array of information. Public libraries are available to the general public for free and provide access to reference materials, fiction and literature, nonfiction, children's reading material, audio and visual materials, and the Internet. College, law, and medical libraries offer more specialized material. Materials are located in libraries through use of catalogues, either card or online. Information and reference librarians are also available for assistance. Libraries usually have archives that contain public information such as newspapers and magazines. Many libraries exhibit materials that are not regularly displayed or that are on loan from other locations. Researching libraries online is can help you find both physical and virtual information. Many libraries offer online catalogues of their permanent collections as well as online tours of current exhibits.
