Student Resources Chapter 3: Incorporating Multimedia Into Your Presentation Chapter Summary There are several types of presentation formats used for multimedia aids, including the straight/continuous, question-friendly, and extemporaneous presentation formats. The straight/continuous presentation format, which can effectively use preset presentation software, contains no breaks during the presentation. The question-friendly presentation format is more structured than the extemporaneous format; however, both adapt to audience questions and responses. Question-friendly presentations best use flexible multimedia aids such as models, writing boards, and overhead transparency projectors. The extemporaneous presentation format lacks a rigid presentation strategy, which makes it difficult to prepare visual aids ahead of time. For this reason, the extemporaneous presentation format best utilizes flexible multimedia presentation aids such as writing boards or flipcharts. There are four purposes for multimedia presentation aids: entertainment, substitution, defense of topic, and audience understanding/topic enhancement. While multimedia presentation aids can be helpful if used appropriately, ill-timed or poorly prepared multimedia aids can have negative effects on a presentation. It is important that the multimedia presentation aids be understandable and appropriate, and that they do not overpower the message of the presentation.
