Student Resources Chapter 6: Using Presentation Software Chapter Summary Presentation software can add to a speech's effectiveness when used properly. It is important to know how to properly operate all equipment needed for presentation software and to verify whether the room that the speech will be given has access to such equipment. Once you have decided to use presentation software, you should outline your presentation to determine where presentation software slides should be incorporated, remembering that too many slides can be distracting and have negative effects on the presentation. When creating the slides, the "presentation wizard" of the presentation software should be utilized to help design each slide. The slides should be easily seen or read and each slide should be consistent in theme and color. When relevant, digital pictures and animation can be placed on slides to enhance the presentation. As with text, it is important that digital images or animation not overwhelm, confuse, or distract the audience. Manual or automatic transitions can used to advance the slides throughout the presentation. Thorough preparation is the key to using presentation software with success.
