Student Resources Chapter 1: Your Role as a Public Speaker Chapter Summary Public speaking is a type of speaking in which you address a group of people for a specific purpose. The public speaker is responsible for knowing the subject matter being discussed and for presenting the information to the audience in a clear and comprehensible manner. Oral communication is a process that consists of six basic components: the sender or speaker, the message, the receiver or listener, the channel, feedback, and environment. These components are necessary to the goal of communication, which is for the receiver to interpret the message as the sender intended. This can be difficult if communication barriers are present. These barriers include physical and emotional distractions and language and cultural differences. To determine whether a message was received as intended, the sender should rely on nonverbal cues from the receiver such as gestures, facial expressions, body movements, and sounds. When preparing for giving a speech, it important to properly select a topic, determine what the purpose of the speech is, and consider who the audience will be.
