Student Resources Chapter 4: Choosing a Topic: Focusing Your Speech Chapter Summary A critical step in creating a speech is selecting the topic. Brainstorming, cluster diagrams, and inverted triangle diagrams can assist in selecting a topic that is appropriate. When selecting a topic your interests, knowledge, and audience should be taking into consideration. In addition to selecting an appropriate topic, the speech's purpose should be determined. The purpose of a speech varies depending on whether you will be giving an informative, a persuasive, or an entertaining speech. Once this is determined, a purpose statement should be written which will keep you focused on the goal of your speech. Additionally, a thesis statement that informs your audience about what you plan to tell them should be created. A thesis statements also can act as a guide while you are researching for a speech.
