Student Resources Chapter 8: Dazzling Your Audience Chapter Summary
It is important to make a positive first impression when giving a speech. This can be achieved with an effective introduction, which should grab the audience's attention, present the thesis and purpose, establish your credibility, and preview the main points of the speech. You can grab the audience's attention by using startling facts or statistics, rhetorical questions, anecdotes, descriptions of scenes or events, quotes, humor, or audio or visual aids. Just as it is important to make a positive first impression, it is also important to make a lasting impression. A strong conclusion should include a summary of the main points given earlier in the speech. Additionally, any attention grabbers used in the introduction may be restated and a call for action can be given if appropriate. Transitional words and phrases should be used to effectively connect main points and ideas. Transitional words and phrases can indicate sequence, compare or contrast ideas, indicate cause and effect, provide an example, provide explanation, add emphasis, and summarize or conclude.
