Student Resources Chapter 9: Delivering Your Speech Chapter Summary Voice volume, pitch, tone, and rate are all speech qualities. When used successfully, speech qualities can increase the impact of a speech and keep the audience involved. Proper articulation and pronunciation are also crucial for an effectively delivered speech. Another factor that contributes to a speech's success is the use of appropriate body language, including gestures, movement, facial expressions, and eye contact. It is important to maintain a professional image while delivering a speech. Clothing, accessories, and personal appearance all affect your professional image. While a public speech is generally an extemporaneous speech (i.e., planned, developed, and organized), it is important that the speech not be memorized. To keep the audience's interest, a speech should sound fresh. Note cards can be used to help maintain your flow throughout the speech as well as ensure that all the points are covered. To ensure a successful speech, it is important to be well prepared. Practicing your speech ahead of time gives you an opportunity to evaluate the speech and time yourself. Online Links
