Chapter 12 - Digital Systems

  1. Refer to Fig. 12-1 (below). Label the sections of a digital computer. (A, B, C, and D)
  2. Refer to Fig. 12-2 (below). What storage devices might be included in the section labeled A?

  3. Refer to Fig. 12-2 (above). What is the name and function of the one-way bus labeled B?
  4. Refer to Fig. 12-2 (above). What is the name and function of the two-way bus labeled C?
  5. Refer to Fig. 12-2 (above). What type of semiconductor memory device is labeled D?
  6. Refer to Fig. 12-2 (above). The semiconductor memory labeled D is a _____ (read/write, read-only) device.
  7. Define these data transmission terms: bps, baud, error detection, parity checking, parity bit, even parity, odd parity, check sum, CRC, error correction codes (ECC), CCITT, MNP, data compression, ZIP files. (use www.pcwebopedia.com)
  8. Refer to Fig. 12-3 (below, prepared using Electronics Workbench®, Version 5). Using circuit simulation software,
    1. construct this simple error-detection system,
    2. operate the circuit to observe its normal operation,
    3. disconnect (open) a transmission line (at A),
    4. operate the faulty circuit and observe its detection of an error, and
    5. demonstrate the error- detection system to your instructor.

  9. Refer to Fig. 12-3 (above). Is this error-detection system using even- or odd-parity?
  10. Refer to Fig. 12-4 (below). Using circuit simulation software
    1. construct this divide-by-60 counter circuit,
    2. operate the circuit to observe its normal operation, and
    3. demonstrate the divide-by-60 circuit to your instructor.
