Q: When I try to dictate individual letters of the alphabet, Dragon generally capitalizes the letter and places a period after it. How can I dictate individual letters of the alphabet using Dragon without having the program capitalize a letter and placing a period after it?

A: You may use the special set of words programmed to produce single alphabetic characters. If the system continues to misunderstand your pronunciation of single letters or if you wish to spell unusual words, the system responds better to your using the following words instead of saying the alphabetic character.

Q: When I dictate numbers from one to ten, Dragon always places them in word form. Sometimes I wish to have the numbers appear as figures instead of words. Is there any way I can clue Dragon to express these numbers as figures instead of words?

A: Yes, you may precede the dictation of the number with the word numeral. If you say "numeral two," Dragon will produce 2 on your screen.

Q: When should I say "Scratch that," and when should I say "Correct that"?

A: If you mistakenly dictate the wrong word or change your mind about the word you dictated, say "Scratch that." If, however, Dragon misunderstands the word or words you dictated, say "Correct that." Sometimes in a string of words dictated, only one or two words have been misunderstood. In these cases just ask Dragon to "Correct (word or words)." Dragon will then produce suggestions for correction. If the correct choice is not in the drop-down list, spell the word or words. Always say "Correct that" for words misunderstood by Dragon. Only by correcting these misinterpretations will Dragon's accuracy improve.

Q: Occasionally I will dictate a word such as format or capital and Dragon will interpret the word as a formatting command. No matter how hard I try, I cannot get Dragon to recognize the word as part of my dictation. Do you have a solution for this problem?

A: One way to solve this problem is to hold down the Shift key as you dictate the word. This tells Dragon that you wish this word to be considered dictation—not a formatting command. Another method you may use with multiple-word dictations that could be misinterpreted as commands, such as start Internet Explorer, is to pause your dictation between each word so that Dragon does not recognize these words as a phrase.

Q: Sometimes when I am using Dragon to dictate a message, I notice that I wish to change the wording I dictated earlier. How do I edit my message?

A: As long as the words you wish to edit are on the screen, you may edit them with voice commands and dictation. Merely say "Select (words you wish to edit)." Dragon will highlight the words. Just dictate the words you wish to have replace the highlighted sequence. When you have finished your editing, say "Go to bottom" to move the cursor to the end of the document.
