Voice Recognition With Software Applications

Script to Construct an Excel 2000 Worksheet
Using Dragon NaturallySpeaking 5.0

Excel Worksheet Application 1

For this first application you will use the script shown below to dictate and use voice commands to construct the following Excel 2000 worksheet. You will use the popular voice-recognition program, Dragon NaturallySpeaking 5.0. Print these instructions and review them carefully before beginning the dictation.

Creating a worksheet using Dragon NaturallySpeaking 5.0 requires your using different strategies than when you use Dragon NaturallySpeaking 5.0 to create a document that will be moved to a word processor. Use the following techniques to correct errors as you create your worksheet using dictation, keyboard commands, and menu commands.

1. If you are dictating text or numbers into a cell and you make a dictation error, say "Scratch that." If the program does not respond to "Scratch that," tell the program to "Backspace X," where X represents the number of spaces you wish to backspace. You need not provide the exact number; you may exaggerate and request the program to backspace more spaces than needed in order to remove all the dictation. You may also say, "Press escape key," to remove everything from the cell and return to the ready mode.

2. If you are dictating text into a cell and the program misunderstands you, say "Correct that." If the program does not respond to "Correct that," tell the program to "Backspace X," where X represents the number of spaces you wish to backspace. Again, you need not provide the exact number; you may exaggerate and request the program to backspace more spaces than needed in order to remove all the dictation. You may also say, "Press escape key," to remove everything from the cell and return to the ready mode.

3. If you are dictating numbers into a cell and either you or the program makes an error, say "Scratch that." Do not attempt to use the "Correct that" command. If the program does not respond to "Scratch that," use the "Press escape key" command.

4. If you dictate a keyboard command and the program enters the command as text in a cell, do not say "Scratch that" or "Correct that." You will lose any entered text, numbers, or formula that the cell occupies. Instead, you must say, "Press escape key" as many times as needed to restore the former contents of the cell.

5. If you consistently have difficulty navigating a menu dialog box because Excel does not respond to your voice commands, use your mouse to make the choice needed. The MouseGrid feature of Dragon NaturallySpeaking 5.0 will not be used in this exercise.

Access your Excel 2000 program. Dictate the following voice commands exactly as shown in the script. Do not dictate the word pause shown in angle brackets <pause>. Instead, pause briefly before dictating the next word or group of words.
