Chapter 1: Living with Art

Artists: Anthony Papa

Anthony Papa's self portrait 15 years to Life appears on page 6 of Rita Gilbert's Living with Art 5th edition. The artist's work can be viewed at the Prison Zone website located at http://www.prisonzone.com/prisonart/index2.html. These paintings "concern themselves with the impact of arrest and prison on a human being".

Artists: Van Gogh

Van Gogh's introspective personality and his tumultuous emotional universe are easily seen in his works. Correspondence to his family during his self-imposed internment at an asylum is just as insightful, helping shed light not just on the person, but on the nature of the artistic process itself. Two wonderful sites explore his life, writings and work:

Vincent Van Gogh---A Handshake in Thought
http://vangogh.org/

The Vincent Van Gogh Information Gallery
http://www.openface.ca/~vangogh/

These sites offer access to both the paintings and the writings that can help you get the big picture on Van Gogh. This site offers access to an on-line biography, his correspondence and photos, and much more.

Art People: Gertrude Stein

This important writer and intellectual figure helped bridge two centuries of artistic and literary movements in Europe and the U.S. If you're interested in exploring Stein's poetry, visit the following site:

This site includes a brief biography, samples of poetry and much more:

Tender Buttons

Tender Buttons is the classic book of poetry that established Gertrude Stein as a master of modern literature. The complete text is available here, on-line.

Describes some interesting "links" between the poetics of Stein, the Internet and current postmodern thought. Check it out for yourself.

Artists: Toulouse-Lautrec

A number of  outstanding digital resources of this artist's work can be found through a simple search through YAHOO. Two of the most interesting are described here.

A great article on Paris, printmaking and the impact of Toulouse-Lautrec can be found at the San Diego Museum of Modern Art's website:

The Juxtapositions website offers a very interesting interactive look at one of Lautrec's most famous prints, along with an on-line introduction to the artist:
