Chapter 2: What Is Art?

Art Issues: Public Art

Yahoo:Public Art
http://www.yahoo.com/Arts/Visual_Arts/Public_Art/
A good starting point for investigating web-based Public Art issues and resources.

Rice Art: Public Art

This site offers considerable links to specific studies and general resources concerning Public Art.

Artists: Henri Rousseau

If you're thinking about taking a "golden parachute" (retiring early), or just cashing in your 401K before your pension kicks in, to follow your dream, Rousseau should be an inspiration. He died dirt poor, but he kept good company during his lifetime, was able to follow his vision to the end--and ended up being a highly regarded artist in his own right. It could happen to you!! The websites below contain information and images on this remarkable artist:

Artchive: Rousseau

Artists: Jackson Pollock

Pollock's painting title Convergence alludes to crucial cultural and scientific themes inherent to the atomic age. As an artistic figure, Pollock raises questions about the relationship of modern artists to their work that should now be totally familiar to us. Does childhood trauma produce artistic brilliance? Are drug abuse and illness by-products of artistic life? Was the chaotic style he developed a reflection of the reigning Cold War Zeitgeist, or his traumatic upbringing? Perhaps it's fair to say these multiple elements and themes "converged" in his work. A great on-line article by Harry Hilson called

Homage to Jackson Pollock

highlights these issues, and presents perhaps the best on-line springboard for exploring themes related to this artist. This site also provides links to other relevant sites and on-line collections of his work.

Artists: Albrecht Durer

Durer's work reflects a wonderful blending of Renaissance scholarship, German craftsmanship and creative artistry. Two websites exist that describe his life and the relationship of his work to the times:

The brief biography of the artist at
http://www.boglewood.com/cornaro/xdurer.html
is also useful.

The best website offers links to examples of his work, as well as a biography, but is in German:

Albrecht Durer: Leben und Werk
http://members.aol.com/SKaiser251/index.htm

It's worth checking out, even if you are unfamiliar with the language.

Art People: Theo van Gogh

The relationship between Theo the art dealer and Vincent the artist highlights the extremes to which true believers will go to support artistic brilliance. The fact that these two were brothers adds another unique dimension to the relationship chronicled in their correspondence, which is available on-line at

The Handshake in Thought website at
http://van-gogh.org/
also contains selections from the memoirs of Jo van Gogh Bongor, wife of Theo.
