Chapter 3: Themes and Purposes of Art |
The efforts made to protect Guernica may seem extreme, but the political and social legacy of Picasso is obviously worth protecting. The Picasso Conspiracy, an interesting website on a little-known painting allegedly by Picasso, attempts to conjure up further controversy concerning Guernica. The site claims that the origins of Guernica lie in this obscure painting rediscovered in the 1970's, and provides detailed comparisons of the work to Guernica and other Picasso masterpieces. However, it's very important to note that the Picasso estate refuses to have the piece fingerprinted and authenticated. What do you think? Is this work a "lost" Picasso masterpiece?

The life and struggles of Cezanne reveal incredible strength of character. Cezanne maintained a diligent relationship with his artistic ideals and craft in order to insure the intangible value of his work, regardless of critical or public opinion. He may have been a grumpy guy who took little pleasure in acclaim when it finally came his way, but he surely took personal pleasure in pursuing his projects on his own terms. O'Keeffe was an American artist and teacher whose work uniquely connected feminine images with the processes of creativity and nature. She was a groundbreaker, both in terms of her unique personal relationship with her husband, Alfred Stieglitz, and in her creative projects. The website,

does a superb job of introducing the artist and describing her work, as well
as her relationship with her husband.
Another insightful website contains the poetry of C.S. Merrill, O'Keefe's longtime assistant, associate and companion:
