  1. Explain how events in the life of Käthe Kollwitz influenced her choice of themes, subject matter and media. What personal and global tragedies shaped her expression? Why didn't she become a painter? What does her work say to people in general? What does it say to you?
  2. Compare the figure drawings of Calder and Hokusai. How did each express the form of the body in space? What kind of lines did each use? Whose do you prefer? Why?
  3. Look at the Raphael and Ingres drawings. How do they differ from the cartoons of Reilly and the monster illustrations of Sendak? Mention purpose in your answer.
  4. What would it take to convert the Ingres drawing into a caricature? Give an explicit description of the steps needed to change it.
