  1. List and discuss the advantages of synthetic paints. How can synthetic paints be used in ways that natural paints cannot?

  2. Describe the fresco process, including all the preparatory steps. Given how demanding fresco is, why on earth would an artist choose it? Explain fully, giving at least one example of a famous fresco.

  3. Discuss Jacob Lawrence's statement that an artist puts himself, not just paint, on a canvas. Give several specific examples from the chapter to prove or disprove Lawrence's point.

  4. Imagine Jan van Eyck and Oskar Kokoschka brought back to life and having a conversation about oil painting. What do you think each would say to the other about his respective philosophy and technique of oil painting? What would each think of the other's choice of colors, texture, brush strokes, application of paint, backgrounds, and so on?
