Chapter 10: Graphic Design

  1. Pretend you're a graphic designer. The U.S. Highway Department wants a new, universal sign to be put on all its highways, advertising the dangers of excessive speed. There are to be no words used. The format is to be circular. Sketch a design to submit to the Department.
  2. Discuss Per Arnoldi's poster Dance for Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. How does it get its message across? Why did the artist use those particular colors, forms and placement? What do you think of the poster? Is it effective? Why or why not?
  3. Explain Marco Ventura's Mona Lisa Contemplating the Bust of Nefertiti as God Creates Order out of Chaos on a Starry Night on the Island of La Grande Jatte as the Infanta Margarita Looks On. What is the message this illustration conveys? Is it a serious message or a humorous one? If you were the artist, would you have done anything differently, added or subtracted any other images? Explain why or why not.
  4. Describe the various factors which graphic designers must take into account when designing book covers versus magazine covers. Then imagine you've been asked to design a cover for TV Guide; who or what would you put on the cover? Would you draw it or photograph it, or what? Describe it and tell why you've chosen this particular illustration.
