  1. Describe the particular sculptural contributions of Christo and Jeanne-Claude. What do you think about their monumental undertakings? How do you react to the fact that all their works are dismantled after a few weeks, leaving behind only pictures and sketches? Is this a good or a bad thing? Explain.
  2. Compare and contrast Smithson's Spiral Jetty with the Serpent Mound. What purpose was served by each? How was each supposed to be viewed? Why did the artists feel the need to move large amounts of earth to make a statement? What statement is being made by the Spiral Jetty now?
  3. Imagine a conversation between Bernini and Michelangelo. What would each say about the works and philosophy of the other? What would each confess was his greatest difficulty, his greatest triumph?
  4. Compare and contrast the works of David Smith and Magdalena Abakanowicz. Mention material, form, texture, installation and effect on the viewer. Which do you prefer? Why?
  5. Describe the process of making a statue by the lost-wax method. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using this type of casting?
