  1. There are several conditions which must be met if ancient art is to survive into modern times. List, discuss, and explain each of the four conditions.
  2. Pretend you are describing the animals in one of the two illustrations of Chauvet cave to a friend who has never seen any Paleolithic paintings yet is trying to make a sketch of them. What would you say to convey the quality of the elements of design, the differing line styles, the specific way the various animals are portrayed? Remember, your friend is trying to reproduce the image as exactly as possible, so be precise in your description.
  3. Compare and contrast the artistic contributions of Egypt and Nubia. Which culture influenced which? Why do we know so much more about Egypt than Nubia? Explain.
  4. Describe the unusual difficulties of building Stonehenge. Tell what it looks like, how it was probably built, and what it was probably used for. How is Stonehenge similar to the giant heads of the Olmec people? Explain.
  5. What was the Amarna style? How did it originate, what were some of its most famous objects, and how was it different from previous styles of Egyptian art? Mention the relevant pharaoh and his contributions when discussing this style.
