Chapter 15: Greece and Rome

  1. Describe the mythological story of Laocoön. Do you think the sculptors picked the right moment of the story to illustrate? Explain why or why not. Would you have chosen another part of the story if you were the sculptor? Place the Laocoön in its proper historical period and context, telling why it looks the way it does.
  2. Contrast the Spear Bearer with any kouros figure. They're both statues of naked men, both done by Greek artists, yet look so different. Why, in less than one hundred years, did the artistic standards change so much? What concepts were driving the Greek artists to make these changes? Explain fully.
  3. The Romans were superb engineers. Prove that statement with descriptions of illustrations from the chapter. Be specific in your examples, and explain the engineering principles and techniques involved.
  4. Explain the differences in how figures were painted in the Dipylon Vase and the Eos and Memnon kylix. Mention form, space, color and line in your answer.
  5. Pretend you're a participant in the event shown in the Villa of Mysteries fresco. Describe what you are doing, what the others in the fresco are doing, and why.
