  1. Discuss the place and aims of art and artists in the year 1000 versus those of the year 2000. What changes have taken place over the past millennium to cause art and artists to be viewed so differently now versus then?
  2. If you were an artist, would you rather be creating in the year 1000, or the year 2000? Explain fully, giving reasons for your preference. Whichever year you choose, tell what media you'd be working in and what your art would look like.
  3. Compare and contrast the nudes of Pearlstein and Freud, mentioning which movement each artist belongs to, explaining why neither shows the face, and giving reasons for which style you prefer.
  4. What message were the Pop artists trying to convey to the public? Explain. What were the Abstract Expressionists trying to say to the world? Explain. What were the Minimalists saying about art? Explain.
  5. Compare and contrast the squares painted by Mark Rothko and Josef Albers. Describe the characteristics of each painter, their goals and techniques. Which do you prefer? Why?
