Calvin Photographic Collection

This site reproduces the photographic collection of Samuel Calvin, a professor of natural sciences at the University of Iowa (1873-1911) and a state geologist, who along with his colleagues, produced some 10,000 gelatin dry plates and glass plate negatives which were used to illustrate specific geological features for class instruction, public lectures, and publications. These photos document Iowa's geological landscapes and features, including mines, quarries, mills, and other buildings.
