About Human Development: Overview, Theorists, and Research Methods

B. F. Skinner on behaviorism. (IM, 1977, video, 28 min.) B. F. Skinner discusses behavior modification, behavioral technology, and the uses of positive reinforcement in shaping human behavior.
Carl Rogers. (IM, 1969, 2 parts, 50 min. each) Dr. Carl Rogers compares the humanistic model of personality with other theories of personality.
Child development. (IM, 1992, video, 30 min.) Presents a historical overview of the contributions of Locke, Rousseau, Freud, Erikson, Bowlby, Watson, Gessell, Piaget, and modern theorists to the field of developmental psychology.

Part 2 focuses on Freud, the Jensen controversy, and applications of Piaget's theory in various countries.

Erik Erikson: A Life's Work. (Davidson, 1991, 38 minutes). Uses biography and interviews to introduce Erikson's theory. Best known for his identification of the eight stages of the life cycle, Erikson spent a lifetime observing and studying the way in which the interplay of genetics, cultural influences, and unique experiences affect individual human lives.
Everybody rides the carousel. (YU, 1982, approximately 25 min.). Describes Erikson's theory of life-span personality development.
Freud: The hidden nature of man. (IM, 1970, video, 29 min.) Using dramatized interviews with Sigmund Freud, this video assesses Freud's theories of psychoanalysis, the Oedipus complex, the unconscious, and the id, ego, and superego.
Infancy to adolescence. (IM, 1990, video, 2 volumes, 60 min. each) David Hartman and eminent researchers in psychology, biology, anthropology, and sociology investigate major theories of human development.
Interview with B. F. Skinner. (Association Films, 1966, 2 parts of 50 min. each). Part 1 includes comments on Freudian theory and principles of reinforcement. Part 2 views applications of operant conditioning.
Interview with Professor Erik Erikson. (Association Films, 1964, 2 parts of 50 min. each). Part 1 describes the eight stages of man. Part 2 comments on existentialism, cross-cultural research, and the impact of psychoanalysis.
Jean Piaget: Memory and Intelligence. (Davidson, 1973, 44 min.) Jean Piaget presents his work on this intriguing subject at a conference in Kyoto in 1971. Carefully translated English subtitles accompany Dr. Piaget's presentation in French.
Jung Speaks of Freud. (PSU, 1957, 29 minutes)
Jean Piaget. (IM, 1969, 2 parts, 40 min. each) This 2-part interview with the developmental psychologist illuminates key concepts of his theory.
Learning. (IM, 1990, 30 min.) Presents information about classical and operant conditioning. A special focus is material on helping hyperactive children with operant conditioning.
Morality: The Process of Moral Development. (Davidson, 1978, 28 min.) This film identifies the progress of moral development starting in preschool years and continuing to its unfolding in young adults. Dr. Lawrence Kohlberg's stages are illustrated in interviews conducted by Drs. Susan De Merresmen-Warren and Elliot Turiel.
Personality. (IM, 1990, 30 min.) Looks at social learning, psychoanalytic, humanistic, and behavioral approaches to personality. Also deals with five-factor theory and the use of twin studies to deal with genetic issues.
Piaget on Piaget. (YU, 1978, 42 min.) Piaget discusses his theory and illustrates some key aspects of cognitive development by referring to his classical interviews.
Piaget's Developmental Theory: An Introduction. (Davidson, 1989, 25 min.) Using both archival photographs of Dr. Piaget and newly shot footage of Dr. Elkind conducting interviews with children of varying ages, this film presents an overview of Piaget's developmental theory, its scope, and content. This video can serve as an introduction to Piaget's work or a review of it.
Probability. (IM, 1991, 2 parts, 30 min. each) Through study of games of chance, covers basic concepts and practical applications of probability theory.
Research methods. (IM, 1975, video, 35 min.) This program addresses the impact psychological research can have on the average person. It explains what sound scientific research methods are and what makes these methods so important.
Research Methods for the Social Sciences. (IM, 1995, no time given) Covers types of experimental designs and their uses; deals with basic features of experiments as well as clinical, correlation, and field methods. Lays out 7 steps of the scientific method, interpretation of data, and ethical issues.
Statistics: Decisions through Data, Part 1. (IM, 1992, 3 volumes, 60 min. each) Basic descriptive statistics, their calculations, and various graphing methods. Uses graphics and animation to integrate real work examples. Includes a discussion of correlation.
Statistics: Decisions through Data, Part 2. (IM, 1992, 2 volumes, 60 min. each) Experimental design; discusses causation and sampling; deals with confidence intervals and statistical significance.
The Ecology of Development. (IM, 1992, 30 minutes) Profiles children of 12 families in five countries to illustrate the influence of family, peers, school, culture, and history on development. Defines the terms of Bronfenbrenner's ecological theory.
The Humanistic Revolution: Pioneers in Perspective. (Perennial Education, 32 minutes) Includes interviews with Maslow, Murphy, Rogers, May, Tillich, Perls, Frankl, and Watts.
Theories of Personality. (IM, 1994, 20 minutes) Uses discussions with clinicans and research psychologists to cover psychoanalytic, humanistic, social learning, cognitive, and trait approaches. Also addresses the stability of personality over time.
Vygotsky's Developmental Theory: An Introduction. (Davidson, 1994, 28 min.) With Deborah Leong, Ph.D. and Elena Bodrova, Ph.D. The video illustrates four basic concepts integral to his work: Children construct knowledge, learning can lead to development, development cannot be separated from its social context, and language plays a central role in cognitive development.
What right has a child? (CRM, no date information available, approximately 15 min.) Describes UN Declaration on Children's Rights and children's reaction to it.
