Banner, L. W. (1992). In full flower: Aging women, power, and sexuality. A history. New York: Knopf . A richly researched trip through history and literature finding models in which gender roles blur.

Bird, C. (1992). Second careers: New ways of working after 50. Boston: Little, Brown. A report on the second careers of 6347 readers of Modern Maturity magazine, arranged by first careers so that readers can learn what other mature workers have done. The book includes a vocational aptitude test that has been validated on older people.

Colby, A., & Damon, W. (1992). Some so care: Contemporary lives of moral commitment. New York: The Free Press. An absorbing and inspiring report of the authors' research on the lives of 23 outstanding moral leaders in communities across the United States. Drawing on in-depth interviews, the authors discuss how these people acquire their moral goals, how these goals changed and grew over the years, and what their lives can teach readers about moral courage.

Estes, C. P. (1992). Women who run with the wolves: Myths and stories of the wild women archetype. New York: Ballantine. The author, a specialist in cross-cultural mythology who was trained as a Jungian analyst, draws on her Latino and Hungarian heritage, as well as the ancient and ethnic stories from other cultures. She analyzes and interprets these tales in terms of their relevance to women's psychology, especially regarding the importance of creativity in women's lives.

Gerson, K. (1993). No man's land: Men's changing commitments to family and work. New York: Basic Books. With the decline of the male breadwinner, deeply held beliefs about manhood and masculinity are being called into question. Here, in a series of life-history interviews, men discuss how their commitments are changing. Ideas are also offered for how we as individuals and a society can encourage progressive changes.

Heilbrun, C. G. (1998). Writing a woman's life. New York: Norton. This provocative book by a feminist scholar and professor blends independent, achieving women to provide positive role models for a wide range of life experiences. The author maintains that traditional male-oriented ways of looking at women's lives have underestimated their possibilities.

Orvin, G. H. (1995). Understanding the adolescent. Washington, DC: American Psychiatric Press, Inc. This book addresses the core issues faced by adolescents and their parents during this time of transition.
