Part 1: What Is the Internet?

Using the Web: Getting Acquainted with CyberEducator CD-ROM Resources

Overview 

In this first activity, you will get acquainted with the resources available on the CyberEducator CD-ROM and Web site: http://www.mhhe.com/cybereducator.

1. Review the "About the CD-ROM" page at the conclusion of CyberEducator for assistance in launching the CD-ROM and accessing its various folders.

2. Insert the CD-ROM into a computer, which has been set up with Internet access. Start the CD-ROM and be sure to double-click on the "ReadMe.txt" file for more instructions about using the CD-ROM.

3. Close the "ReadMe.txt" file, return to the opening screen, and double-click on the "start_here.htm" icon to access the main page. After the page displays, you will see a menu of buttons on the left. Explore the different components of the CyberEducator by clicking on these buttons. Many of the resources include links to other Web sites on the World Wide Web. To return to the CyberEducator site, simply click the BACK button on your Web browser. Each of the CyberEducator CD-ROM resources are described below:

  • Overview describes CyberEducator features.
  • Interactive Table of Contents takes you to resources and activities organized by chapter.
  • Featured Web Links gives you an interactive list of the sites described in the chapter.
  • Web Tours guide you to outstanding sites organized by chapter topic.
  • Video Mini-Cases offer video clips that accompany several of the chapters.
  • Using the Web Activities are step-by-step instructions for practical applications of the World Wide Web.
  • Mailing Lists detail a variety of excellent educational discussion forums that you can subscribe to and participate in through electronic mail.
  • CyberLibrary provides an extensive collection of valuable Web resources organized by educational topic.
  • Web Search Tools give you easy access to outstanding search directories and engines in one easy location.

4. Now that you have acquainted yourself with how CyberEducator and its resources work, you are ready to begin exploring the range of educational resources available on the Internet. Be sure to access the CD-ROM to view the video cases when they are mentioned in a chapter, and for easy access of CyberEducator sites, tours, and activities.
