Part 8: Student
Diversity and Exceptionalities
Using the Web: Create a Project that Integrates Diversity
Overview
Create a student project that integrates diversity and multicultural
education in a specific academic subject area and grade level. Use the
featured Web links within this chapter to help you. The following questions
and additional online resources provide a framework for developing your
project.
- What is your chosen subject area and grade level? What
is the title of your project?
- What are the instructional objectives for your students (i.e.,
what do you want them to learn from the project)?
See AskERIC Lesson Plans (http://ericir.syr.edu/Virtual/Lessons/)
for examples of detailed student objectives.
- Provide an overall description of the learning activities that
students will complete for the project.
Go to the "Global School House: Collaborative Projects" page of
the Lightspan Web site (http://www.lightspan.com)
to explore activities and online project ideas that integrate countries,
cultures, and classrooms from around the world.
- What kinds of choices do your students have within the project?
Visit GlobaLearn (http://www.globalearn.org/)
for ideas about how to offer students a variety of topic and concept
choices when working on their projects.
- How can students relate the project to their own lives and
experiences?
See Building on Prior Knowledge and Meaningful Student Contexts/Cultures
(http://www.ncrel.org/sdrs/areas/issues/students/learning/lr100.htm)
to learn more about how to link new information to your students'
prior knowledge and backgrounds.
- In what ways will participating in your project help students to develop
more cultural awareness and respect for diversity?
Learn more about how to design activities that foster cross-cultural
understanding and respect at the "Teacher's Corner" page in the Multicultural
Pavilion Web site (http://curry.edschool.Virginia.EDU/go/multicultural/teachers.html).
