Using the Web: Using Online Tools for School Improvement

Overview

The Web offers many valuable tools and resources for assisting administrators. For example, the award-winning site, Pathways to School Improvement (http://www.ncrel.org/sdrs/pathwayg.htm), offers not only a collection of papers that address a wide range of critical issues in education but also provides useful online exercises to personalize and stimulate deeper investigation of the topics.

In the following Web-based activity, you will have an opportunity to determine the strengths and weaknesses of the leadership at your school using a Trip Planner Inventory. This tool develops a customized "School Improvement Inventory Profile" and illustrates high priority areas for leadership development. The Profile also provides a customized selection of Pathways resources that support growth in your identified areas of need.

Step 1:

Participate in the following activity to begin exploring leadership issues at your school.

  1. Go to the Pathways to School Improvement (http://www.ncrel.org/sdrs/pathwayg.htm) Web site.
  2. Click on the Leadership link.
  3. Visit the Trip Planner Inventory link and read the instructions.
  4. Click on the Go to Log-in Registration link, which appears at the bottom of the Trip Planner Inventory Web page.
  5. Enter the registration information and submit your form.
  6. Select Leadership from among the Trip Planner topics, and then click on the Go to Selected Topic button.
  7. Complete the leadership survey, and then submit the form.

Step 2:

Think about the following questions.

  • How did you rate your school's leadership strengths and weaknesses based on the feedback you received in your Customized School Improvement Inventory Profile?
  • Identify your high priority areas for leadership and school improvement.
  • With whom can you collaborate on improving your school's areas of weakness?

Step 3:

Begin your school-improvement efforts by exploring one or more of the identified "Critical Issues" links.
