Part 12: Educational Research and Statistics

Using the Web: Access Current Research about Key Education Issues

Overview

Researchers and educators can stay current on important education issues by utilizing the numerous research resources available on the Internet. The U.S. Department of Education offers several collections of research publications that address hot topics and key issues in education. In the following activity, you will have an opportunity to explore one of these collections and focus on education issues relevant to your specific interests and needs.

Step 1:

Go to the Collections of Research Syntheses (http://www.ed.gov/pubs/collect.html) Web site and review the available research collections.

Step 2:

Explore ERIC Digests.

  1. Click on the ERIC icon to go to the Search ERIC Digests Web page (http://www.ed.gov/databases/ERIC_Digests/index/).
  2. Visit one of the lists of ERIC Digests to see the wide range of topics that are addressed.
  3. Review your selected list, and then click on specific Digests of interest to you.
  4. Return to the Search ERIC Digests Web page by clicking on the "Back" button of your Web browser.
  5. Use the "search" tool on the Search ERIC Digests Web page to find Digests that address specific topics of interest to you. Enter keywords, such as "school-based management", "charter schools", or "bilingual education" into the blank search area, and then click on the "Find" button. (Enclose keywords in quotation marks to search for titles and/or body text that include your specific phrase.)
  6. Explore your returned list of Digests.

Step 3:

Investigate a second research collection of your choice from the Collections of Research Syntheses Web site. How does the research in this collection compare with the ERIC Digests?
