Part 15: Classroom and School Web Sites

Using the Web: Create a Web Page

Overview

Now that you have had an opportunity to explore some of the creative ways that other teachers and students are using the Web, it is time to become a Webmaster yourself! Numerous resources are available on the Internet that can help you design Web sites for electronic student portfolios, homework and project assignments, school newsletters, and calendars with just a few clicks of the mouse. The following activity utilizes one such resource and offers step-by-step instructions to create a Web site of your choice.

Step 1:

Think about the following questions as you proceed through the activity:

  • What kind of information would you like to be able to distribute quickly and easily? (Assignments, classroom projects and events, student achievements, etc.)

  • What is the purpose of your Web site? (Inform families of homework assignments, issue a school or classroom newsletter, publish student work and portfolios on the Web, etc.)

Step 2:

Participate in an online tutorial to create a Web site.

  • Enter the "bigchalk community" by going to http://www.schoollife.net/.

  • Click on the orange "community tutorial" link for step-by-step Web site design instructions.

  • Follow the 10 steps in the tutorial to:
    • Become a member of the bigchalk community for free;
    • Create a Web site using a selection of design kits;
    • Customize and edit your Web site;
    • Add more pages to an existing site or create new Web sites.

Step 3:

Access your Web site and explore other members' Web sites.

  • During future visits to the bigchalk community, you may access your Web site(s) by clicking on "view my profile". You can click on your Web site link(s) to edit current information, add additional pages, etc.

  • Explore Web sites created by other teachers and students within the community by clicking on the "find my community" link. You may find sites by using the search tool, or click on "teachers" to see how other educators are integrating technology into their curriculum and classrooms.
