THE LEGACY OF MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. -- ACHIEVING EQUALITY WITHIN DIVERSITY

Still today, the most fundamental of questions concerning diversity and equality face America's educational system. We do not yet know how schools can best prepare young people from widely varying backgrounds with the mutual understanding and respect necessary within a diverse society, how to achieve equality of educational opportunity, or how best to make schools places that reflect the rich ethnic and cultural traditions within our multicultural nation.

A multicultural society creates vast opportunities for growth and change based upon the diversity within it but also creates the potential for prejudice, discrimination and racial conflict. Schools can play an important role in the development of positive attitudes among young people toward individuals of different ethnic, racial and cultural backgrounds. From an early age, children begin learning about prejudice, intolerance, acceptance and respect. By the primary grades, they recognize that social status and positive or negative qualities can be ascribed to people based on the attributes of race and ethnicity.

In fostering schools and classrooms that value and respect our nation's diversity, it is valuable to recognize those individuals who have played central roles in fostering equality of opportunity. No one individual is more distinct in this regard that Martin Luther King, Jr. On the third Monday in January, the nation celebrates the achievements of this leader who contributed so much to achieving equality and dignity for all races and peoples in the U.S.
