It is well-recognized that homework provides important opportunities to reinforce and extend students' learning outside of the classroom. Research shows that for high school students, two or more hours of homework nightly is associated with increased achievement, for junior high school students, one to two hours of homework is related to improved performance, and in the upper elementary grades, a measurable effect of homework on achievement is also found.
Homework at the elementary level, has, in addition, the benefit of brining home and school close together, and of encouraging pupils to recognize that they can learn on their own. Homework offers parents an opportunity to become involved on many different levels with their children's learning and schoolwork. Through parents and students working together, a students' skills can be strengthened; further, parental attention sends a strong message that schoolwork is valued.
Well-designed homework enhances students' retention of knowledge through practice, review, application, and reflection. It gives students a chance to practice skills learned in one setting and at one time (school) in another setting (home) at different times. It can, in addition, supplement knowledge and skills taught in the classroom, provide for further individualization, and provide increased opportunities for challenge and critical thinking."
In summary, homework has the potential to increase achievement, especially when it is checked and comments on it are given to students. For most subjects and grade levels, it is important: to assign homework; for parents as well as students to know of homework policies; and for students to receive teacher feedback on their homework.
