K-12 News Briefs

The nation's governors and leading corporate executives are preparing for a March education summit that will focus on strengthening America's schools. Technology will be on the of primary areas of attention.

The March summit will be the most significant meeting of state education policy-makers since 1989, when the 50 governors and President Bush met and established national education goals. The summit will examine two issues: (a) expanded support for the school standards that derived from the governors' 1989 summit and (b) wider use of computers and other technologies in K-12 classrooms.

In related news, the President's State of the Union address requested funding to link every American public school to the Internet. In addition, the telecommunications reform legislation just enacted by Congress included important provisions that give preferential rates to schools for telephone and cable services.
