K-12 News Briefs

Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley delivered his third annual "state of American education address" at the end of February and called for a new national reading and writing initiative. "You can't cruise or use the Internet if you don't know how to read," Secretary Riley said. "Our most urgent task is teaching our children good reading habits, getting America serious about reading."

The recent report of Public Agenda, "Given the Circumstances: Teachers Talk About Public Education Today," demonstrated the significance America's teachers place on students' mastery of language arts skills. A majority of teachers indicated that students should not receive high school diplomas unless they demonstrate a clear command of English.

In an important related matter, the nation's new English-Language Arts Standards have just been released. Prepared by the National Council of Teachers of English in collaboration with the International Reading Association, they include standards related to reading, literature, writing, speaking, and listening, and they include attention to media-related literacy skills.
